Phenomenological metaphysics: the Sartrean Legacy (Workshops Commemorating His 120th Anniversary)
(English information below)

September-December, 2025
120 years later, in the Chinese-speaking world, Sartre’s phenomenological ontology still seems to be waiting for its readers. Under the seemingly familiar label of ‘existentialist,’ this novelist of existential absurdity and human freedom, this student of Husserl and teacher of Deleuze, this thinker who eternally opposes himself, remains a figure whose philosophical profile is still unclear. Is ‘existentialism’ really a form of humanism? Is it a kind of ‘metaphysics of subjectivity’? Is it a romantic rationalism? Is it a renewed Cartesianism?
Through three workshops with emerging scholars, we hope to (once again) call upon readers for Sartre’s philosophical works. We will focus on Sartre as a phenomenologist, exploring from different angles how he employs and radically transforms phenomenology, thus opening new directions for metaphysical questioning.
This workshop series is chaired by Di Huang (ECNU) and hosted at the Department of Philosophy, ECNU, in collaboration with the ECNU Center for Knowledge and Action Research.
The schedule for the three workshops is (tentatively) as follows:
